Imran Khan, Former Pakistan Prime Minister has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for leaking state secrets.
This is according to a statement released today Tuesday 30th January 2024 by his political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The hearing took place in a closed court established under the Official Secrets Act in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.
Imran is currently serving another jail term of three years after he was convicted of corruption in 2022.
This was after he was ousted by his opponents as Prime Minister in 2022.
Imran Khan is however dismissing the allegations terming them as politically motivated following their 2024 General elections.
The former prime Minister alleged that the Pakistani government conspired with the country’s powerful military and the US to remove him from office in 2022. All parties deny Khan’s accusations.
His legal team will challenge the decision in a higher court as they hope to get the sentence suspended.
The media are banned from ruling Khan’s speeches, and many of his PTI party colleagues have been arrested. CNN reported.
