Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has now fallen out with French defender Raphael Varane who continues to be linked with a move away from Old Trafford slightly over two years after joining from Spanish giants Real Madrid.
According to the Daily Mail, the duo’s relationship has ‘practically broken down’ after Varane was relegated to the bench due to Ten Hag’s preference of 35-year-old centre back Jonny Evans and the resurgence of Harry Maguire.
Varane joined Manchester United in the summer of 2021 in a £41 million move and was instrumental in Ten Hag’s debut campaign last season. He made 34 appearances – missing out some matches through injury.
The former Ajax manager recently pronounced himself on the defensive pecking order at the club, suggesting that the four-time Champions League must must and earn his place in the starting lineup.
“There is internal competition, which is normal in big clubs. When your chance comes, you must seize it and the others must fight to find their place. He [Maguire] took his chance. We were talking about injured players, he took his chance when Rapha [Varane] was absent,” Ten Hag told beIN Sports.
The Daily Mail reports that the relationship between the Dutch manager and his World Cup-winning defender completely broke down after that interview and a move away from Old Trafford is the most likely situation.
According to the publication, the duo had a man to man exchange of views after Varane was dropped in United’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City on October 29, 2023.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s just rumours but there is internal competition,” Ten Hag denied reports of a broken relationship with the 30-year-old.
