What was obviously a great moment for Manchester United’s Midfielder Hannibal Mejbri, continues to elicit mixed reactions.
The 20-year-old was ecstatic after he scored Manchester United’s consolation goal in their 3-1 loss to Brighton on Saturday.
In only his fourth appearance at Old Trafford, he entered the game as a substitute and notched his inaugural goal for the club.
Clearly aware of the controversy surrounding his celebrations, he took to social media to express his thoughts.
Hannibal has personally defended his action by stating that:
“Years of work went into that moment to score a goal for this incredible club.
“Impossible to enjoy it without the team getting the result we wanted.” he wrote on his X timeline.
It goes without saying that he will not remember the results of the match but his epic goal for Manchester United.
United’s manager Erik Ten Hag didn’t hesitate to commend Hannibal Mejbri for his goal.
However, the Dutchman also highlighted the performances of three other United players.
Despite the loss, Ten Hag had words of praise for Diogo Dalot, Marcus Rashford, and Rasmus Hojlund, even though United’s defeat to Roberto De Zerbi’s side was disappointing.
Manchester United has suffered defeats in three of their last four matches, facing setbacks against Tottenham, Arsenal, and Brighton.
Ten Hag openly expressed his concern regarding the team’s current form.
Unsurprisingly, the United manager was questioned afterwards about whether this string of losses could be deemed a crisis.
“No,” was his response.
“But we have to be very disappointed and we have to be very annoyed with ourselves. Because at United the demand is you win games.”
As it stands, United found themselves in 13th place in the standings with six points, while Brighton climbed to fourth, trailing league leader Manchester City by just three points.
